TimeLlama started as a "quick" internal tool for a software dev team that couldn't find anything decent. That quick tool turned into 30,000 lines of code, 10 years of daily use, and eventually - a proper product.
Born out of frustration. Kept alive by necessity.
We're Brainwave Software Labs, a software engineering firm based in George, South Africa. We build real, engineered software for a living.
the making
The prototype
Couldn't find a decent way to track time on software dev projects - individually or as a team. Everything we tried got ignored after a week or produced numbers nobody trusted. So we threw together a quick internal tool. Just to see what was going on.
Just chugging along
No drama. TimeLlama quietly did its thing - recording stats, keeping us honest about where client time actually went. It became background infrastructure. The kind of tool you only notice when it stops working.
The pivot
We needed a new feature. One problem - the original codebase was built in an older language that had hit its ceiling. So we did what any self-respecting engineering team does: ported the whole thing to a more modern programming language. Painful at the time. Worth every line.

We started sharing TimeLlama with peers, clients, and friends across different industries - accountants, brokers, consultants, IT firms. Every single time, TimeLlama showed up and made sense of the time. Turns out the problem isn't specific to software development. It's any professional services firm that bills by the hour and wonders where the day went. That's when it clicked - this should be a product.

Team stats, blended statistical reporting, intuitive web interface, accessible from anywhere. We never thought we'd be here with this. But if the shoe fits, we're damn well gonna wear it.
We weren't trying to build a product. We were just trying to figure out how much damn time we actually spent on different projects. Ten years later, here we are.
